App-V 5 Beta Component Communication Overview

April 27, 2012

“Alles bleibt anders” (Everything remains different) might be a good short description for App-V 5 (Beta). While most of the components keep their names and follow existing general concepts, quite a lot changed under the hood. This post gives you a short overview about Aoo-V 5’s main components and the communication flow between them.

Use App-V 5 Beta Publishing and Management Server with a Remote Database

April 18, 2012

App-V 5 Beta allows to connect to a Database that is installed on a remote machine. However, it has shown that using a remote SQL Database is not that trivial. This article will highlight how to prepare the remote SQL Database to be used by App-V 5.

Reading through the documentation there is no hint that connecting an App-V 5 Publishing Server to an SQL database that is running on a different machine might be sort of ‘special’. Instead, it states something like “just enter the name of your Database Server’ and that’s it. Well, if you read some forum articles, posts and tweets it appears that this implementation does not exactly provide an ‘out-of-the-box’ experience. Let’s see…

Howto: Increase the Update Speed for Application Changes

April 16, 2012

So, you followed one of the posts orthe Admin Guide that have told you how to publish a new application with the App-V 5 Beta Management/Publishing Server(s) – but your Client doesn’t seem to refresh changes?

The potential reason for this is an interval that is defined on the Publishing Server feature. By default, it only refreshes its information every ten minutes. If this appears to slow for you, there is a simple switch to shorten that period…

HowTo install App-V 4.5 Management Server on Windows Server 8 Beta

April 15, 2012

A colleague of mine, Volker Kleiner (owner of , posted a German article on about how to install the App-V 4.5 Management Server onto Windows Server 8 Beta. Why… well, because it just doesn’t work out-of-the-box. During installation, you’d get an Error 25100 or Error 25122. For Windows 2008, a solution is described at MS KB2212140, but that doesn’t work on Win8: To prepare the machine, you need to “convert” it into a “GUI less” server instance and convert it back afterwards. This is the (loose) English translation of that article…

HP Discover 2011 – personal findings

December 3, 2011

I was given they chance to attend this year’s European HP Discover event in Vienna. Because there were some quite surprising aspects for me, there might be some news for you as well.

Apparently, I am not that Server Hardware, Network Equipment nor Storage guy, so I was quite sceptic about the value HP Discover could give to me.

So I was seeking for at least ‘sort of’ interesting stuff amongst the 650 breakout sessions and technical demos. Of course there were tons of Storage and Server related sessions, but also a lot of ‘cloud’ stuff I actually started with.

After some German only events, I’m glad to announce the first Euopean App-V User Group Meeting on Nov. 18th in the Netherlands.

There will be about half of all world wide App-V MVPs on site (most of them even presenting), so this is probably a unique oppurtunity to meet with them and other community leader.

While the day is fully packed with awesome presentations, time is planned for questions and answers. And as Community events should be: it’s free!

You can register at

If you’d like to tweet about it: #AppVUG is the tag of choice.

Hope to see you there!

Citrix Provisioning Services – Today’s Hotfixes

September 6, 2011

Citrix’ policy for the release of Provisioning Services is – let’s say it
that way – not quite clear. mal. Some Hotfixes simply disappear from the public
site, some hotfixes that appear there are replaced by others. Also, the
individual CTX articles for the hotfixes don’t always tell clearly, if a hotfix
has replaced others or if it was superseded itself.

Forced to by some projects I tried to collect all the Citrix Hotfixes that

  • Designed for Citrix Provisioning Services 5.6 SP1
  • Are public available
  • Have been released until Sep. 6th, 2011

Please refer to the PDF for more details on the hotfixes: Citrix-PVS-Hotfixes_2011-09-06

[Update 2011-09-12] Hotfix clarification by Citrix Support about E028 and E006 applied: E006 replaces E028. The updated PDF is Citrix-PVS-Hotfixes_2011-09-12.
